¿Por Qué Español?
Learning Spanish is important to me because it will make my life more diverse and give me more opportunities to succeed in life. Being bilingual gives you many different opportunities that you would not get if you were not bilingual. Things such as job opportunities, friendships, love, and your future could dramatically change if you were bilingual. For example, your soulmate or best friend in the world might speak a different language and you would only be able to meet them or interact with them if you are bilingual. Being bilingual also makes you smarter. The article “Why Bilinguals are Smarter” by Yudhijit Bhattacharjee states “It requires keeping track of changes around you in the same way that we monitor our surroundings when driving.” This makes our brains work harder so it grows the muscle that is your brain.

Park Experience Reflection
The Park Elementary experience was when a class of high school students ventured to Park elementary in order to work with bilingual students in their classes. Each high school student or “Big” was paired with a “Little” and stuck with them for a day a week for two weeks. We prepared in class by reviewing our spanish and making thank you cards for our littles.
My experience at Park Elementary was very good! I had previously attended Park Elementary so it was an interesting experience to be back there again for the first time in 4 or so years. My little’s name was Alex. When we first met I could tell he was super energetic just like I was at that age. The next time I met with alex it was clear that he was much more comfortable with me helping him. We played a game with balloons the first day we met and he was all over that. The next time we went straight to class. Alex and I got along very well and became Amigos.
School for a bilingual kid is much harder than one that speaks the same language at school as they do at home. Homework is a big problem because their parents may not be able to help them through the language barrier at home. At school they learn in a different way than their parents may teach them. One benefit to being bilingual at school would be that you could help other students with learning another language. Alex did a great job transitioning from spanish to english then back to spanish every day.
This experience shed new light to me about the struggle of being a bilingual learner. This experience also made me inspired to continue my spanish learning. If I were to go back I would try to inspire Alex to go more into his learning. I learned a lot from watching Alex learn and seeing the teachers deal with him. I really enjoyed this experience and working with a kid like Alex.
I had a really good time with this project. This project was super inspiring and I loved hanging out with my little. Alex is a great kid and I hope I get to see him in the future.
